I first became interested in the uilleann pipes and traditional Irish music at the age of 14, when I got a job working as a dishwasher in an Irish-American pub in Spokane, WA. Those recordings of the Chieftains and the Bothy Band fascinated me, even though I wouldn’t see a set of uilleann pipes for the first time until many years later. The itch to learn the pipes persisted, and after graduation from college I saved up for a used set of uilleann pipes (which I had no idea how to play at the time!) and moved to Ireland in order to study traditional Irish music. I spent two years living in Galway, where I studied with Éamonn Brophy and also got the chance to work with many other great pipers including Leo Rickard, Joe Doyle, Mick O’Brien, and Néillidh Mulligan. I moved back to the USA and relocated to Boston in 2003 to start graduate studies in recorder and early flutes at the Longy School of Music, graduating in 2006, and have been based in Boston ever since. I’m fortunate to work as a freelance musician around the US, performing and teaching both classical and folk music.
